Westleigh Park – Approval of the Development Application
234 words, 1 minute read time.
Westleigh Park DA – Monday 9 December 2024
Our support continues for this project to build a much-needed recreation facility at Westleigh Park.
This development took a significant step forward in December 2024, with the approval of the Development Application by the Sydney North Planning Panel.
Our community is excited to finally see that after years of extensive consultation by Hornsby Council, detailed investigations and planning, this independent Sydney North Planning panel has given the project approval.
Council website states: “The site for Westleigh Park comprises around 36 hectares of cleared open space and bushland. The redevelopment will create a major parkland with spaces for play, sporting activities including football, athletics, rugby, AFL and cricket. The Master Plan proposes structured sporting activities on three sporting platforms (providing up to six sports fields) and unstructured passive recreation experiences throughout the park, including:
- Five sports fields (including two all-weather field) and one all-weather athletics track
- Cycling and mountain biking
- Walking paths
- Informal exercise spaces
- Children’s playground and picnic areas
- Connections to local and regional bushwalking trails, and
- Passive recreation spaces.”
“This is a great win for residents of Hornsby Shire and the northern Sydney region, giving us the opportunity to meet the ever-growing need for open space and recreation facilities for the area.”

Thank you !
Update on support of our local community event, cracker ‘Fireworks night’ held on Saturday night 28 July.
Fantastic to see thousands of people gathered and enjoying the night together… with the finale of some brilliant fireworks!
Thank you to our major sponsors NorthConnex
And our other event sponsors:
Thank you to Matt Kean, Martin R Dargan, Geoff Knowles, the WWBA Committee and all the fab volunteers who supported this wonderful community event, to formally announce the $40M funding secured for development of this site!
Thank you to our musicians for the entertainment:
- Michael on his didgeridoo
- Thornleigh West Public School Stage Band
- Live Band ‘Ministry of Rock’ and their support crew
Around 4,000 people turned up on a cool winters’ evening to show their support for this worthy initiative of the WWBA and help raise funds towards the site’s development.
Once again, congratulations to one and all who played a part in the success of the night. Feels great to be a part of this community!
Saturday night makes the two years of hard work all worthwhile… MASSIVE thanks to all who were involved in organising, running & cleaning up the Fireworks Night.
It was a well run, happy community event, enjoyed by one and all. Well done! Look forward to next year.
We can be proud of the way that our responsible community left the entire Ruddock park area – followed by a dedicated team from the WWBA and sporting groups who were determined to leave Ruddock Park clean and tidy as if no one was even there. That team did not leave until after 10pm.
(Although we did not have much to clean up really, as everyone had done the right thing and used the bins provided).
Here’s looking forward to future development of this open space, as well as funding and formalising the awesome resource that is Westleigh MTB Track. 🙂

NSW Funding Secured!
Major News!
MORE THAN $40,000,000 approved and allocated!
Westleigh Park is going from a dream, to soon be a reality after a “secret” $90 million in the State Budget was allocated for local projects. More than $40M of this funding is allocated to Westleigh’s development.
This funding will ensure successful conversion of the Westleigh Waterboard site into a recreational centrepiece for our region. This is not only a massive bonanza for the local sporting clubs, but a win for Westleigh as it will also provide multifaceted recreational open space for everyone who lives in the area.
What an outstanding result for all who have helped in this Westleigh Waterboard Alliance effort to ‘have a local voice’ towards getting a mixture of all weather facilities for all sports in this site.
Congratulations to everyone involved and those behind the scenes with WWBA to getting this for our community. This will be a wonderful asset for all of us & for our kids to use and enjoy. Thank you also for your support and drive Matt Kean (and everyone behind him as well!) – an amazing team effort that has pulled off the unthinkable!!

WWBA: Who, Why, What?
WHO IS THE WWBA?
The Westleigh Waterboard Alliance (WWBA) is a formally registered organisation which was formed by local residents and members from local community groups & sporting organisations. The WWBA aims to bring together all sporting and recreational bodies with the aim of ensuring that the solutions provided at ‘Westleigh Park’ by Hornsby council, will meet all community requirements.
Lifetime membership of WWBA is $10 and is open to anyone who would like to contribute.
WHY WAS THE WWBA FORMED?
In June 2016, Council PURCHASED from Sydney Water 34 hectares of land in Westleigh.
The land was purchased by Hornsby Council to meet the escalating shortfall of quality public sporting facilities in the Hornsby Shire and across Sydney’s upper northern region.
The WWBA was formed to ensure the best utilisation in the development of the former Sydney Water land.
Mountain bike trails have been established on the site for some time. Council intends for these trails to stay, pending the outcome of site investigations.
Show your support: More Sports Grounds for Westleigh
Dear Local Residents,
A few years ago I was proud to have helped the community stop developers from taking over the Sydney Water site at Westleigh. Now I want to ensure everyone can benefit from this site by turning it into sports grounds.
